4th Annual FHR Race 2009

It’s on. The 4th annual Fucking Hills Race. We at point83 pirate Cascades Chilly Hilly, do 33 miles of hills on Bainbridge Island on February 22nd, have a fat fucking chili feed at the end of it, and give away schwag from our many and excellent sponsors.
I mean, you can ride Chilly Hilly – there’s nothing stopping you. But we ride the same route at exactly the same time, and have far more fun doing it. I think it’s like $30 to do the Chilly Hilly with Cascade, includes your ferry fare, but you have to pay for the chili feed at the end, and there’s no schwag. Ours is $7, includes all you can eat chili, and comes with schwag, but you pay for your own ferry ride. And we’re not douches. Well, most of us aren’t. It’s a pretty sweet deal. Oh, and you get to thumb your nose at Cascade a little. Extra bonus!
Anyhow, here’s the thread:

Ride on bitches. Leave your spandex at home.

Edit: Small point. We make a differentiation between Cascade the bike club and Cascade the advocacy engine. Between bike clubs, there is a small amount of rivalry – in that there is a minority in CBC that dislike us a great deal and we heckle them for it. But that’s it. As an engine for advocacy, CBC does some good stuff. I’m not buying a bib because I’m not riding their ride (seriously, fuck that shit), but I will donate $30 to Cascade for their advocacy efforts.
Carry on

Fog

Bicycling through the fog – always smells like dust to me. Like I’m pedaling through ghosts.
Don’t have much to write about. Rode out to the Tuesday prefunk, had a good time but bailed on the ride itself for no one reason.
I need to remember to have fun bicycling. I think it’s easy to forget that. Sometimes I concentrate so hard to get over the next hill or dive through traffic… it’s easy for me to forget to loosen up and enjoy myself – I just nose down and start powering through. Problem is I have a hard time pulling my nose back up.. Need to remember to do that more often. I also think I need to make a decision and push myself harder. Work on different (and weaker) muscle groups to get up hills and the like. Work on my sprinting and my quads. Pushing from your hamstrings is easier and more efficient, but there is more power to be gained out of my quads,
Meh – saw a green Long Haul Trucker with moustache bars and orange velocities tonight – looked badass. He also put V-Brakes on it which I thought was interesting – I’m not a fan of the cantis. They just don’t have a lot of stopping power.
Ordered double-pull brakes and a nitto noodle bar for the pacer.
I think my spoke cards are the culprits making my mysterious ride noise. I remember Uncle Martha talking about that on his bike. Sorta hoping it’s not that because I like them.
Yeah anyhow, just checking in before bed I guess.
Night kids.
I-5 Collonade – Mountain Bike Park

I don’t mountain bike, so I guess this is why I haven’t been paying attention to this. But hell – it’s literally 300 meters away from my front door.
Under I-5, these people built this badass mountain bike park called The I-5 Colonnade, underneath 12 lanes of the I-5 Freeway. Great article – go read:

Great pictures, great article – nice job guys. Seriously. I’m being lazy and snagging a couple pictures. Should go take my own. Some bicycle blogger I am.

Front racks

Someone on bike pirates asked a question about front racks and what came back were some racks I’d not heard of before. Figure they warrant some mention/documentaton.
Anyone who’s kept up my blog knows that I won’t shutup about the two racks I have.
the CETMA 5 rail I have on my Pacer

And the Surly Nice Front Rack on the Bicycle Eater

Guess what I didn’t know was racks from http://oldmanmountain.com – personally I think they’re sorta ugly and overbuilt, but they’re priced right and appear to be pretty burly.

and these racks which are beautiful, but (I think) overpriced from Pass and Stow
Anyhow, the weather this weekend was totally incredible. Didn’t get as much riding done as I’d have liked, but still. It was nice to putter around in the sunlight.

This is for my edification only, and because I must do real work and simply want to come back later and get at these.

Look mom, Drops!
The drops feel much much better on it – and I hate drops, so what’s that tell you about that flatbar – eesh. I was also having problems with the transmission using the downtube shifters, but now that I’m using the more modern and tighter bar-end shifters, that transmission is 100% rock solid. 3×10 Dura Ace ftw! The configuration feels good, but hoods don’t provide one with a lot of mechanical advantage on those brakes, highlighting what Evil Mike was saying last week about the benefits of single-pivot vs double-pivot brakes. So I guess next paycheck I’ll cut over to double-pivot brakes. So be it. Brakes are always a good investment.
The basket came – still need fenders. There’s talk of a camping trip out to Neah Bay that I’m very excited about. Another Suiattle type road washout for 113 miles along the coast apparently. Boy that’d be excellent.
I think that’s about it. Average speed to work this morning was 16.5mph. Average. Max speed was 25.4mph. This bike is fast fast fast to ride – a real pleasure.
Back to the grind.
Onward.
.83 Christmas Tree Massacre

In a world ruled – some might say hemmed – in by laws and regulations and guidelines, there’s something truly remarkable about a night like this. Thursday night was awesome. Everyone met at Westlake Center with xmas trees lashed to trailers and bicycles and messenger bags, we wandered over to Golden Gardens and had a bonfire. I think we had over 30 trees. I didn’t start the evening in the best of moods, but by the end of the night I’d a great time.
I stole these pictures from Alex, Laura, and Mordac respectively.
As you can see, the new rack works exactly as I hoped it would.
