Surly Bad Monkey

I finally got a replacement camera for the one that was stolen, so now I’m updating the blog with pics of bikes I’ve been building for the last several months.  Pictured here is my modded out Karate Monkey – aka The Bad Monkey.

Here are the goodies

  • 18in 2009 Surly Karate Monkey
  • 3 pair brazeons on the fork (low/mid/high) for low rider racks
  • 2 pair brazeons on the rear triangle (for a rear rack – Surly now does this on their stock KMs)
  • 1 pair brazeons under the top tube (for a pump or flask – forgot to put it on for the pics durrr)
  • three (3) brazeons under the downtube for a 3rd water bottle (and some cage configurability)

After I had the work done I had it powdercoated RAL1019 truckaccino brown (with a zinc undercoating for better rust protection).

Around the head tube is a Road Soda from Freight Baggage – designed to hold a drink, but is awfully handy for holding a camera or ipod while you’re riding too.IMG_0782

Again, the mods were done by Haulin Colin.  Rear rack is obviously Old Man Mountain.  I really can’t say enough good things about either outfit.  Colin does top notch work at very reasonable prices and is Seattle local obviously, and OMM really went the extra mile to get me a mounting kit that fit this unique config – gave me a call, we had a chat about what I was mounting it to, and they sent the proper kit with the rack.  Top notch all the way guys.  Big thank you.

Aaaaand yeah.  That’s all I got.    REST OF THE SET IS HERE

Carry on.

PS found a pic of that pump mounted under the top tube.  Not a great pic but a pic none the less.  It actually works very well there.  Pic is ugly – click on the link below for the original shot.

  1. Sweet!

Whats the front rack for? Saddle bags?

    Cool color.

  2. Where did you get the inserts for the dropouts to keep the wheel from sliding forward when using gears?

I could use some of these for my Soma B-Side!

  3. Those are monkey nuts, and they don’t keep them from sliding around I’m afraid. They simply pull the wheel back so the tires don’t hit the seat tube.

The only thing I found that keeps the back wheel from walking around – and I have looked – are these http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=4...
