Today I dropped my bike off at R&E Cycles for an evaluation, but they won’t be done with it until next Thursday. Sucks because I was hoping to go bike camping this weekend for Ben Country with the pointythree crew. Briefly bikeless, Henry offered up his Surly Long Haul Trucker since his collarbone is still healing and can’t ride. Henry lives less than a block from me so popped over there and picked it up.
Gotta say – what a cool bike. It’s a lot different than my bike. I’ll take pictures later but the long and short is, this thing is a monster. It weighs 39lbs empty. My bike weighs 19lbs empty. The LHT has generators and panniers and racks and lights and full fenders, and mine has – empty water bottle holders. The center of gravity is much lower on the LHT and centered on the wheels (especially with those paniers) which makes for a completely different ride. My bike, the center of gravity is much much higher, the bike, a lot more maneuverable.
Tomorrow I’m going on a ride around the city to get used to the bike and decide if I’m going to ride to Ben Country on Henry’s LHT, or driving a support rig.
My wrists hurt.
Bedtime for Bonzo.
